IP geolocation databases are built from regional registry records, BGP routing, latency measurements, Wi-Fi and network data contributed by partners, and corrections submitted by network operators. None of these reveal where a device physically is — they reveal where an address block is likely used.
Typical accuracy: country level is right in the vast majority of cases; city level much less often, especially for mobile networks, VPNs, satellite links and carrier-grade NAT, where many users share addresses at a central location.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my IP show the wrong city?
Your ISP may route traffic through equipment in another city, or the database may be out of date. Mobile networks commonly show the location of a regional gateway.
How can I correct my IP location?
Our location data comes from DB-IP, which we refresh daily; send them a correction request and it will appear here after their next release. Network operators can also publish geofeeds (RFC 8805), which most databases import.
Can websites see my exact location?
Not from your IP address. Precise location requires your permission through the browser's Geolocation API.
